Set in the woods close to the Mierystock crossroads, Waterloo is a very pretty, peaceful place to fish.  Like most of the Club’s waters, this was the location of a busy coal mine; a recent memorial to those who died at Waterloo Colliery (the “Arthur and Edward Pit”) is adjacent to the lake.  See this link for further information. A spoil heap to the west and a few steel cables in the ground also betray the site’s heritage.

Over a decade ago the pond leaked suddenly following a particularly harsh winter leading to the rapid evacuation of the stock of fish, see photo at foot of this page. The pond was relined, checked, filled from a local stream, and restocked with fish.

Like all RFODAC waters, the lake is leased from Forestry England.  Access is via a gated track on the south side of the road, approximately half a mile west of the Brierley “Jet” petrol station.  The entrance is just after the brow of a hill, be careful!  If coming from the Coleford direction, the entrance will be on your right, 600 yds past the Mierystock crossroads.

Those with a Forestry key can open the gate and drive to the small car park closer to the lake itself, please don’t block the turning loop.

Waterloo is not used for club matches; there are a number of platforms and some areas of the bank which are perfect for a day’s fishing.

Over the past two or three years the Club have struggled to control weed growth at this location, the lilies can grow faster than the work parties can clear them.  This means that much of the lake can be unfishable in later spring and summer.  Maybe in the 2024-25 season, we will get enough people to work parties to clear this problem for the whole year; this will rely on a good turnout for work parties, something we’ve never been able to rely upon.

Stock

Road, rudd, bream and tench, along with a small number of carp have been stocked in Waterloo.
